What I've Learned from the Information Detox

What I’ve learned from the info detox

In case you haven’t heard, for the month of July, I am doing an information detox (read more about it here). Here’s a brief recap of the rules I set for myself

1. Limit my social media consumption
2. Unsubscribe from email lists
3. No reading self development or business books
4. No listening to self development or business podcasts
5. No buying courses, workshops, etc

Here’s a recap of how things are going so far:

Limiting my social media intake

It really depends on the day for that one. I wish I could say I have been doing amazing at this, but I would maybe give myself a B- for it. I have been reading fiction books when I sit down to nurse, but I would like to implement some more rules and boundaries around mindless scrolling on Instagram and Facebook.

Unsubscribe from Email Lists

As I’m getting emails from people that I’ve opted in to their lists, I’m asking myself if it’s something that I am really benefitting from. Many of the lists I’m on I signed up because I wanted to see how they were engaging with their lists. I want to trust myself more, and do what feels right, not what others are doing. I still read a few (especially my friends), but I have gotten off a few lists that didn’t make sense for me.

No Self Development Books or Podcasts

I am happy to report I get an A+ in this department. I’ve been listening to a lot more music, or just sitting in silence when I drive. My mind doesn’t feel as full or cluttered, but I do miss the learning piece of it. I was also going to try to limit my googling, but so far I’ve googled, How to make kombucha and Baby food recipes. It’s really hard not to use google!

No buying courses, workshops, etc

I almost slipped up once, on a $27 template I wanted, but told myself it was something I already knew, I just needed to DO THE WORK. That’s the problem, I think buying another course or going to another workshop is going to help me get further, when in all actuality, just doing the work and taking massive action is what is going to move the needle in my business.

What I’ve Learned and Noticed

I love information. It’s hard for me to not consume it, but I do feel less pressure to read ALL THE BOOKS and LISTEN TO ALL THE PODCASTS. There is so much good info out there, but if I’m not careful I can get easily overwhelmed by it.

This information detox has me observing the here and now and taking note of what I like and what I don’t like.  I am digging deep into what it is about certain experiences that feel good. Is it the smells? The company? The feel of the the chair I’m sitting on? The taste of the coffee I’m drinking? The music or sounds of the birds chirping? The energy? Then, once I’ve determined what it is that is making me happy in that moment, I’m making a mental note. And I can take that thing, and make sure I do a whole lot more of it in my life, intentionally.

We have choices. Every second of every day is a choice. Our choices create our actions, and our actions add up to our life. If there is something in your life that doesn’t make you happy, check with your choices. YOU ARE IN CONTROL.

Now, what kind of experiences make you happy, and what about those experiences is it that you need more of? Once you figure that out, make small changes to your environment to reflect those experiences. You will be happier.
