garden 2015: ed. 1
I have been thinking about my garden all winter and thankfully its almost time to plant! But first, the planning!!
Gardening can be as easy or as hard as you want to make it. You can grow a small tomato plant in a pot, or you can plant an extensive garden with lots of vegetables and maybe some herbs and perennials. Or a little of both!
Gardening is a process. Every year we get better at it and we change up how we do things. The type A part of me wants it to be perfect, but the more I learn about it, the more I realize that its all just an experiment. So plant something, and the worst that can happen is that it doesn't grow. But most of the time it does!
My first step to planning my 2015 garden was to pull out my haphazard "garden journal" and look back on previous blog posts. Both were helpful in seeing what worked last year and what I want to focus on this year. I don't keep a very thorough garden journal, but the little I do get written down, helps, so drop that all or nothing attitude and just get started!
Here's my list from September 2014 of things I want to plant.
Watermelon Cantaloupe Cauliflower Broccoli Brussel sprouts Green beans Peas Carrots Beets Tomatoes (cherry) Cucumbers Swiss chard Lettuce Spinach Kale Asparagus Strawberries Raspberries Peppers: bell and hot Squashes: butternut, spaghetti Onions Garlic
Herbs: basil, oregano, thyme, rosemary, lavendar, dill, sage, lemongrass
The second step was to look through all of the seed packets that we have already.. I made a list of those, then a list of seeds that I'm going to need for the year.
My next step will be to actually plan out where we are going to put everything...
I'm going to diversify this year. Put more herbs in the vegetable garden. Maybe put some lettuces along my patio walkway. Do our potatoes in straw bales. Plant an asparagus and raspberry patch.
So many dreams...
